Attending a job interview can be stressful–you have to assemble a great resume or portafolio, know what to say, behave properly, and definitely try to look your best, OMG!
Relax, here I give you some ideas to project the best version of you, to feel powerful and confident. Keep in mind that while your knowledge and experience are important, the way you present yourself in that interview may put you over the top.
Your first impression in a job interview is key, so you need to choose the right clothes, and dress for the job you want.
- If you are totally lost on what to wear, why don’t you research how employees normally dress in that organization. Every company is different and the best way to know and get information is by ASKING. You could ask the recruiter or HR department or person who contacted you for advice on what to wear, or simply ask for the company dress code. This will be totally ok.
- Of course it depends on the area you want to work: the fashion industry, a corporation or an educational or manufacturing setting, etcetera but my advice is to avoid wearing ripped jeans, shorts, flip-flops, hats–steer clear of the super casual concept. Also, big labels or messages printed on clothing are not a good idea. If it is a creative job and you go with jeans, they need to be your best ones, better wear dark denim. Jeans with a chic jacket looks great.
- ALWAYS wear clean clothes without spots or discoloring. Pay special attention in your personal care to look fresh and clean, and please don’t pour half a bottle of perfume on yourself. Sometimes people don’t like that or have allergies and it could provoke the interviewer to want to throw you out of his/her office. Girls, avoid super extra-long painted fingernails. These details can sound funny or extreme but trust me, they are very important issues to keep in mind.
- For a corporate interview I recommend you wear a suit, this is something that says you mean business. It is so important to strike the right balance between your own personal style and looking professional. Also, pay attention to your shoe-wear–they should always be clean and definitely leave those super high-heels that you have trouble walking in at home.
- Step out from any kind of distraction in your persona, I mean avoid big or busy patterns, over-bright clothes or neon, or all the hues of the rainbow. Choose simple accessories and not too many: if you go with a statement necklace, avoid a second statement or noticeable piece of jewelry. Maybe a nice bracelet and no rings…most of the time simplicity projects a clean and fresh image, so don’t overaccesorize your look. Never, ever go with a pair of bangles that clang every time you move your hand, so distracting! The point is that you don’t want to distract the employer from your elaborate resume and outstanding experience.
Oh! I almost missed an important aspect: deep cleavage is always a no-no in a job interview.
- If you choose to go monochromatic in black, add some neutral or nude color to enhance the equipment instead of going with all black (black dress or bottoms paired with black top and black shoes). You’ll look plain or boring or like you just came from a funeral. How about, for example, a printed silk or chiffon blouse under a classic black blazer or structured jacket instead? One of the looks I really like is a pair of black slacks teamed with a nice white button-down blouse or shirt. It looks polished and clean.
These are some ideas that could help you feel great and comfortable during your job interview. It’s a fact that clothes don’t define you, but they are a way to communicate to the world what you’re all about.

¡Qué tal! ¿Como va tu semana?
Asistir a una entrevista de trabajo puede resultar estresante: tienes que armar un buen curriculum o portafolio, saber que decir, mostrar educación y definitivamente tratar de lucir lo mejor posible, ¡Oh!
Relájate, aquí te paso algunas buenas ideas para proyectar la mejor versión de ti misma y sentirte poderosa y con confianza. Ten presente que así como tu conocimiento y experiencia son importantes también lo es la manera en que te presentes a la entrevista, para tener mayor posibilidad de encabezar la lista de los mejores prospectos.
La primera impresión en una entrevista de trabajo es clave, por lo tanto debes elegir la ropa adecuada y vestir para el trabajo que deseas obtener.
- Si te sientes totalmente perdida en cuanto a la elección de la vestimenta, por qué no investigas como es que visten normalmente las personas que trabajan en dicha organización para la cual deseas trabajar. Cada compañía es diferente y la mejor manera de saber y obtener información es PREGUNTANDO. Puedes pedir información al departamento de Recursos Humanos o a la persona que te contactó para que te asesore en cuanto al dress code. Es totalmente aceptable preguntarlo.
- Por supuesto que depende mucho del área en la que quieres trabajar: industria de la moda, un corporativo, en la parte educativa, en una fábrica, etcétera; pero mi consejo es evitar vestir con jeans rotos, shorts, chanclas, sombreros…Aléjate del concepto super casual. También mostrar marcas o mensajes plasmados en la ropa no son buena idea. Si el empleo es para un área creativa y deseas llevar jeans, debes usar los mejores que tengas de preferencia en mezclilla oscura. Los jeans con un saco o chamarra estructurada lucen muy bien.
- SIEMPRE viste con ropa limpia, sin manchas o decolorada. Deberás poner atención especial en el cuidado personal para lucir una imagen fresca y limpia, y por favor no te vacies media botella de perfume. Muchas personas pueden ser alérgicas o detestar el olor tan fuerte, que puede provocar que tu entrevistador solo te quiera fuera de su oficina lo antes posible. Chicas, eviten las super uñas largas con laboriosos diseños. Estos detalles pueden sonar chistosos pero créanme, son puntos muy importantes a considerar si realmente deseas obtener el empleo.
- Para una entrevista corporativa te recomiendo optar por un traje sastre, ya que transmite seriedad y confianza. Es muy importante mantener un balance entre tu estilo personal y el lucir profesional. No debes olvidarte del calzado, este debe estar muy limpio y definitivamente deja en casa esos tacones altísimos con los que apenas y puedes caminar.
- Evita cualquier distración en tu persona, me refiero a evitar estampados grandes o muy saturados, prendas brillantes o en tonos neón o llevar todos los colores del arcoiris en tu ropa. Elige accesorios simples y escasos: si llevas un collar llamativo, evita usar otra accesorio que llame la atención. Puede ser una linda pulsera y evitar los anillos grandes…La mayoría de las veces la simplicidad proyecta una imágen mas limpia, por lo tanto no debes llevar accesorios de más. Nunca, pero nunca uses esas pulseras que suenan cada vez que mueves tu mano, ¡son una enorme distracción!. El punto es no distraer a quien te entrevista al revisar tu elaborado curriculum. ¡Ah! Casi olvido un aspevto importante: el escote pronunciado siempre será un NO en una entrevista de trabajo.
- Si deseas ir con un look monocromático (mismo tono de piez a cabeza), por ejemplo en color negro, añade un tono neutro o nude para realzar el conjunto en lugar de ir toda de negro (vestido o pantalones negros con blusa y zapatos negros). Luciras muy simple y aburrida o como si vinieras de un funeral. ¿Qué tal, una blusa estampada de seda bajo un saco negro o una chamarra estructurada?, por dar un ejemplo. Uno de los looks que me agrada es pantalones negros con una bonita camisa o blusa blanca de botones. Da una imágen pulida.
Estas son algunas ideas que pueden ayudarte a sentirte muy bien y cómoda durante tu entrevista de trabajo. Es un hecho que la ropa no será lo que te defina, pero es una manera de comunicar al mundo sobre ti.
